This was a great post. I had known that by puncturing and scraping off the bark of a tree’s main trunk that it could cause damage, but I never thought about climbing spikes or shoes also causing that same damage. I really like how you made sure to input situations where it is OK to use climbing spikes as well. Thanks for the tip.

I had known that by cutting into a tree, particularly removing the main trunk’s bark, that it could cause the tree long term damage and harm and may even kill the tree if enough bark is removed. So the idea of pruners using spikes to climb the main trunk and damaging it in the process should not be surprising especially if they puncture the bark and it breaks off. Though I also like that you put in certain situations where the spikes can be used and thought it added in an alternative viewpoint to the use of spikes. Hello! Thanks for such a wonderful and informative article. To climb, you’ll need climbing spikes, which are leather- and padding-encased spikes that attach to the bottom of your leg. The only time a tree worker should utilize them is to get access to the trees they’ll be removing.
