I can not reroute the drive. Are there other actions I can take to protect the health and roots of this tree? Will deepening the earth over these roots be acceptable? Must I build a bridge? I really don’t want to lose the tree.

The use of root barriers and other root-growth inhibitors around hardscapped areas is essential. I didn’t realize there where so many other ways to mitigate other potential issues. Thanks for the article!

We loosened the soil from the roots out of the bucket, buried the tree 1 inch above the roots, let the soil lay as it falls and added the mulch 6 inches out from the trunks. It was a great learning experience. I’ll be planting my own soon, and now with certainty that they’ll survive!
